Most states require that an addiction counselor be certified or licensed. Organizations such as the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals (NCC AP) provide education and certification opportunities. To become a certified addiction counselor, a candidate has to pass an exam. The NCC AP offers different levels of certification such as National Certified Addiction Counselor I and II and Master Addiction Counselor (MAC).  The NBCC offers certification as a Masters Addition Counselor. Addiction counselor exams cover such subjects as screening, assessment and engagement, treatment planning, collaboration and referral, case management, individual and group counseling and professional responsibility.
