Electrician Practice

Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in ­­Texas.

Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Qualifications Needed to Receive a License

Journeyman Electrician - A candidate must have completed at least 8,000 hours of training on the job while supervised by a master electrician before taking the Journeyman Electrician Examination.

Master Electrician - A candidate must have had a journeyman electrician license for 2 or more years and have completed a minimum of 12,000 hours of training on the job while supervised by a master electrician before taking the Master Electrician Examination.

Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.

Test Content

Master Electrician Exam - The electrical contractor exam consists of 100 questions with a time limit of 5 hours. A candidate needs at least a 75% grade to pass.

The exam covers the following subject areas:

  • Definitions, Calculations, Theory and Plans
  • Electrical Services, Service Equipment and Separately Derived Systems
  • Electrical Feeders
  • Branch  Circuit Calculations and Conductors
  • Electrical Wiring Methods and Electrical Materials
  • Electrical Equipment and Devices
  • Motors and Generators
  • Electrical Control Devices and Disconnecting Means
  • Special Occupancies, Equipment and Conditions
  • Renewable Energy Technologies

JourneyMan Electrician Exam - The journeyman exam consists of 80 questions with a time limit of 4 hours. A candidate needs at least a 75% grade to pass.

The exam covers the following subject areas:

  • Definitions, Calculations, Theory and Plans
  • Electrical Services, Service Equipment and Separately Derived Systems
  • Electrical Feeders
  • Branch Circuit Calculations and Conductors
  • Electrical Wiring Methods and Electrical Materials
