Motivational Interviewing
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach often used with clients who are ambivalent about change but are mandated to counseling by family or the courts. MI helps the client determine what changes can help them get what they want and what steps they could take to make those changes. It is an effective approach for substance addiction, particularly when clients do not recognize their substance issues. It is less insight oriented and focuses on resolving ambivalence and resistance.
