Family members are naturally dependent on each other. An action by one member creates a reaction from another. Interdependence refers to the sequencing of events and circular patterns of behavior in families. In families where there is substance use, the drug plays a significant role in the interdependence within the family members. Interaction does not address the circular patterns of behaviors just the interaction between individuals. Enabling happens when family members step in and prevent consequences of the negative decisions of the substance user.
