Describe the acute physical and psychological effects of crack.
Crack has the same kinds of acute physical and psychoactive effects as other types of cocaine and amphetamines. The drug has very rapid effects, reaching the brain within 7 seconds and creating a rush. The aftereffects of the rush may last 10 minutes. When the drug effects wear off, the user is left wanting more, which may lead to binge use. Acute physical effects include increases in respiration, body temperature, and blood pressure, and well as increase in heart rate and changes in heart rhythm. High doses cause muscle twitches, tremors, spasms, and convulsions. Acute psychological effects include euphoria, enhanced sexual pleasure, increased activity level, and increased alertness.
