On June 17, 1968, The U.S. Supreme Court heard the case of Jones v. Alfred H. Mayer Company. In its decision, the court upheld the Civil Rights Act of 1866. This decision is important because although federal law exempts individual homeowners and certain groups, the 1866 law prohibits all racial discrimination without exception. The issues of age discrimination and familial status discrimination were never addressed in the Jones v. Mayer case. Discrimination based on national origin refers to discrimination based on the country of birth, and does not specifically pertain to race. National origin was not discussed in the Jones v. Mayer case.
