The computer does not operate the ignition coil due to high voltages and currents. The computer signals the ICM when to create the spark. The ICM uses a power transistor to turn on the primary circuit and charge the coil by building an electromagnetic field and fires the spark by shutting off the current. This allows the field to collapse and create a high voltage current in the secondary circuit.
