Academic Tests

Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System (RICAS) - Each year, students in grades 3-8  are tested in English language arts and math. The RICAS are aligned to Common Core State Standards.

National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) - Students in grades 4 and 8 are tested in math, reading and science. The NEAP is not administered every year, and it is only given in select schools. 

Next Generation Science Assessment (NGSA) - Students in grades 5, 8 and 11 are tested annually in science. These exams are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards.

Rhode Island Arborists Tests and Licensing - Arborists in Rhode Island are required to take both a written and a practical exam to receive a license. The written exam is theoretical and the practical exam covers planting, pruning and tree surgery. An additional exam is required for a certification to spray pesticides.

Rhode Island Cosmetologists Exams and Licensure - Cosmetologists and barbers in Rhode Island must pass a two-part exam. The first part of the exam is a written section that covers theoretical aspects of the profession. The second part is a practical that tests candidates' skills. The exam is given three times a year.

Rhode Island Irrigators Tests and Licensing - Irrigators in Rhode Island must pass an exam to be licensed. Rhode Island recognizes both master and journeyman irrigators and gives a separate exam for each. The test is a written exam. An apprenticeship is also required.

Rhode Island Tattoo Artists and Body Piercers Tests and Licensing - Tattoo artists and body piercers in the state of Rhode Island must pass a practical in order to obtain a license. During the practical applicants must demonstrate their skills at tattooing and prove that they can operate in a safe and antiseptic manner. There are no educational requirements.

Rhode Island Wildlife Rehabilitators Exams and Licensing - Wildlife rehabilitators in Rhode Island have to pass a written exam designed by the Division of Fish and Wildlife. They must also have some biology and animal handling training, and they must pass a basic skills course given by International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council. The fee is $25 and reciprocity is not allowed.

Driver's Tests

Rhode Island Driving Tests - Rhode Island requires new drivers to take a computer-based knowledge test, a vision screening test and a road test before being licensed. Drivers under 18 must also take a driver's education course. New residents over the age of 18 with a valid out-of-state license are exempted from testing.

Rhode Island Commerical Driving Tests - Applicants for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must pass both a written and a road test. After they pass the written exam they receive an instruction permit and can then set up a time to take the road test. Applicants must also pass a medical exam.
